Spend the afternoon discovering Mobile’s rich history with FREE ADMISSION to the History Museum of Mobile, Colonial Fort Condé, and Phoenix Fire Museum on Sunday, September 6, from 1–5 p.m. At the History Museum of Mobile, meet the Oakleigh Belles, who will bring Mobile’s past to life through engaging storytimes and a fun coloring station for young visitors. At the Phoenix Fire Museum, discover Mobile’s firefighting history and enjoy special architectural tours offered throughout the afternoon. Members of the University of South Alabama Department of Physics will give a presentation, and set up the telescopes on The Great Lawn. They will set up a telescope to hunt for deep sky objects and point out the visible constellations. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars to this viewing. Also, there are several free apps for smart phones available that identify stars, constellations and planets by pointing the smart phone to a direction in the sky. The skies around Bellingrath Gardens have less light pollution than nearby larger towns so dimmer stars will be visible. Sunset in Mobile, Alabama on September 16, 2026 will be at 6:56 PM with Astronomical Twilight at 8:17 PM. A talk will be presented from 6:40 PM to 7:10 PM. After the talk, participants will go to the great lawn to the telescopes to observe the night sky. Join us for the 39th Annual Coastal Cleanup and help Gulf State Park keep the trash out of the splash! Meet park staff at the Gulf State Park Beach Pavilion to sign in and collect your supplies. The event runs from 8am to 12pm. Some volunteers might be asked to assist at other beach access points. Parking is free for all volunteers. After gathering trash, return to the Beach Pavilion to weigh your collection, return your equipment, and receive your complimentary shirt and hotdog voucher. This program is great for all ages!
