39th Annual Coastal Cleanup
Gulf State Park PavilionJoin us for the 39th Annual Coastal Cleanup and help Gulf State Park keep the trash out of the splash! Meet park staff at the Gulf State Park Beach Pavilion to sign in and collect your supplies. The event runs from 8am to 12pm. Some volunteers might be asked to assist at other beach access points. Parking is free for all volunteers. After gathering trash, return to the Beach Pavilion to weigh your collection, return your equipment, and receive your complimentary shirt and hotdog voucher. This program is great for all ages! NatureNauts STEM Day
Bellingrath Gardens & HomeJoin us from 9 AM until 1 PM for NatureNauts STEM Day, a fun-filled day of hands-on learning and outdoor exploration for the whole family! Explore interactive STEM exhibits, educational activities, and exciting wildlife experiences from organizations across the Gulf Coast. Participating vendors and organizations are listed below. Historic Blakeley State Park’s Delta Explorer River Cruises – For additional ticketing, tours of the Fowl River will be offered at 9:30 am, 10:30 am, 11:30 am, & 12:30 pm; children 4 and under must bring their own life preservers. Plan to arrive at our River Pavilion at least 10 minutes before its departure. The Reptile Bus with Outdoors with Jay – Reptile trailer with a variety of snakes, lizards, turtles, and an opportunity for participants to touch a snake; a snake safety/reptile presentation at 10:45 am AWF Delta and Bay Conservation Center – Reptile and amphibian ambassadors, a variety of mammal pelts and skull replicas, including a presentation discussing keystone and indicator species and how they influence and reflect their environment, offered at 9:15 am, 10:15 am, 11:15, and 12:15 pm. Bellingrath Gardens & Home NatureNauts™ – Hands-on activity relating to nature and the Gardens Evonik – Chemistry-focused hands-on activity Sea Scouts – Static Display, Video, Ocean Habitat Mini Reef, Offshore Safety Gear Rebuilding Together of South Alabama – Demonstration on a rain barrel. It will be a walk through on how to install on and the environmental benefits. Also, participants will be encouraged to get involved and volunteer installing rain barrels throughout the community. Mobile Bay National Estuary Program – We will provide water quality monitoring activities and education to complement the sign and WQM station on the dock. Mobile Public Library – Bookmobile on location; organizing some STEM activities Dauphin Island Sea Lab’s Marine Mammal Research Program – We will have interactive organ games where children & families can put the internal organs of dolphins and manatees in the correct spots. We will also provide take-home materials such as infographics and educational coloring sheets. Lynn Meadows Discovery Center – A child-appropriate activity focused on STEM, most likely relating to nature/the gardens to fit your space Hargrove Engineers –Their team will put together a Homopolar Motor, and participants will have the opportunity to put a kit together. Alabama Audubon – How to use binoculars. Build a bird. USCG Auxiliary – Table with info and examples of how to keep our waterways clean & how to stay safe in the water Honey of the Hill Apiary – Live observation honeybee hive. Honey tasting. Native pollinators education. National Weather Service Mobile – Interactive weather experiments & weather information Alabama Coastal Foundation – Share the Beach turtle conservation activity Alabama Marine Resources – Activity books, swag, and handouts Mobile Urban Growers – Seed starting; display of garden curriculum; free seeds University of South Alabama/Dauphin Island Sea Lab – A hands-on introduction to submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV)—the “grasses” and other plants that grow completely underwater in our coastal waters. Mobile County Public School System (MCPSS) – Participate in the Wildlife Crossing Engineering Challenge to create a wildlife crossing or bridge that could help animals safely move across a waterway or wetland habitat. Discovery Crew – To Be Announced Bishop State Community College – Computer simulations, preserved bio specimens, chemicals, flyers Mobile Local Section of the American Chemical Society – Chemical demos Food Trucks – Shaved Ice Paradise, Shux Y’all, Not Your Average Joe, Frank and Lola’s And much more! Kid’s Day: Young Entrepreneur Showcase
The National Maritime Museum of the Gulf of Mexico 155 S Water St, Mobile, AlabamaJoin us to empower our youngest business minds to run their own small business on September 19! Youth ages 5-17 are invited to showcase their creativity at the Young Entrepreneur Showcase by selling handmade products, offering professional services, or sharing their business ideas at the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf. Plus, participants ages 14-17 can compete in a pitch competition for a chance to win prizes! From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., you may also enjoy live music, face painting, shopping and fun activities for all ages. Click here to register for the Young Entrepreneur Showcase. Space is limited, so early registration is encouraged. Young Entrepreneur Showcase In order to have a booth at the showcase, participants ages 5-17 must be able to Set up and manage their booth. Answer customer questions. Take/fulfill orders and accept payment. Participants are allowed to sell handmade items, baked goods, art, crafts, jewelry, clothing, services, or other youth-led business ideas pending approval through the registration process. They are also welcome to advertise their business and set up promotional displays. Participants are NOT allowed to sell fresh foods that need to be kept cold/hot or made on site, pets, items sold for their parents, or promote fundraisers. Participants must be actively involved in making or sourcing their products. Registration for a booth is free, but participants must have a City of Mobile Business License in order to participate. The fee to obtain a Business License is $25. Click here to apply for a City of Mobile Business License. Note: the application should be in your child's name. If your child does not have an ID, they can use their birth certificate. If you are a returning vendor, the cost of a license is $50. Required Informational Session Participants are required to attend an Informational Session from 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 15 at the Innovation Portal (358 St. Louis St, Mobile, AL). This session will: Walk participants through the event process and expectations. Provide guidance on obtaining the $25 (new participants) and $50 (returning participants) City of Mobile Business License. Assist with registration for the Showcase. Coach those participating in the Pitch Compeition. Answer questions for both parents and participants. Representatives from the City of Mobile Revenue Department will be present to help with licensing questions, and the Innovation Portal team will be present to provide insight into the Pitch Competition process and expectations. Pitch Competition Youth ages 14-17 may also participate in the Pitch Competition! Compete by presenting your ideas to local business leaders for a chance to win 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes.
