7th Annual Massacre Island

Fort Gaines Historic Site

It was the early 1700’s when Pierre LeMoyne d’Iberville came ashore on Dauphin Island and stumbled upon a huge pile of human bones. Thinking it was the site of a mass killing he dubbed the island “Massacre Island”. In reality, the site was a Mississippian burial ground that had been unearthed by a recent hurricane. However, the dramatic misnomer remains today. You are invited to visit historic Fort Gaines on September 14-15 and see pirates (in period garb) as they pilfer and pillage Isle Dauphine and fight against Spanish and British Galleons. Who knows, you may even find a pirate’s treasure!
