Alabama Poppy Project at USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park

USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park

The Alabama Poppy Project is a moving tribute honoring the memory of Captain Kyle Steven Hansen (USAF) and all those who have served our country. Created in 2020 by artist and potter Julianne Hansen as a creative and therapeutic response to grief, the project features thousands of hand-crafted ceramic poppies displayed as a symbol of remembrance, sacrifice, and healing. Since its beginning, the exhibit has grown from 1,001 poppies to more than 2,000 for this year’s display, drawing visitors from across the region to reflect and pay tribute. Displayed annually around Memorial Day, the Alabama Poppy Project serves as a powerful visual reminder of honor, service, and community remembrance. During evening hours, a visual video display can also accompany the exhibit, sharing the story of the memorial poppy, its origins, and photos of those being honored through sponsored poppies. Those wishing to honor a loved one with a Memorial Poppy, please visit Welcome to the Alabama Poppy Project | AlabamaPoppyProject.com.   Parking is $5 per car and $30 per vehicle with three or more axles.

Discovering the World of William Bartram

Blakeley State Park

William Bartram, America’s most famed naturalist, visited what is now Alabama in the summer and fall of 1775 during a four-year odyssey of discovery through the American South. The landscapes, plants, animals, and people he encountered were truly remarkable, and he was particularly impressed with what he found in the Mobile-Tensaw Delta. In 1791 he published a book, commonly called Travels, that recounts his adventure. Through detailed descriptions and colorful prose, Bartram’s work opens a vibrant window into a world that may seem quite alien to us today, but one which you can glimpse if you’re looking in the right places! During a two-hour cruise along the waters of the tranquil Tensaw River retracing a portion of Bartram’s route and in a short free presentation afterwards, Brian Rushing, a Bartram “enthusiast,” will introduce you to this colorful character. Along the way we’ll discover the wonderful things he saw and experienced while on his journey, and his incredible contributions to biology, history, and literature. Participants will come away with an appreciation for not only Bartram as a scientist and an artist, but of the landscapes and Indigenous People that once existed in what we now call “Alabama.” Adults $26 Kids $19
